During the news fellowship, you'll have the opportunity to:

  • Pitch and write stories for IJR.com in-house and in the field, relating to Washington politics and national news
  • Curate social media for IJR's brand pages
  • Collaborate with other departments to pitch and develop multimedia or video concepts
  • Assist with special projects for the editorial team
  • Monitor traffic for the news team

What we want:

You have a native sense of what news is truly meaningful to our audience. We need a creative person with a love of storytelling mixed with raw journalistic savvy.

Create something new. If it’s been done, we’re not really interested. The media world has never been more diverse and accessible. Concurrently, reporters have never had more storytelling technology at their fingertips. You know your audience. Our news is custom-built for sharing. We rely heavily on knowing what our readers want before they do, and we do not cater to the pretentious elites or the numbingly polarized.

You should be an absolute news junkie, addicted to the news cycle and native to the news instinct which is so necessary in this modern digital environment.  This veteran journalist will work with our established news reporters and editors to exercise independent judgment to present to our audience the most important, breaking news of the day.

This job would ideally be based out of our Washington, D.C.-area office.

Here is what you’ll be responsible for in this position

  • Maintaining homepage value for our audience by keeping relevant, timely and interesting pieces on site.
  • Curating breaking news topics 
  • Posting well-sourced breaking posts for IJR about politics and/or current events.
  • Following your own leads and writing your own stories, as you see fit.
  • Heavy emphasis on video and social media content to break posts.

We're looking for creative and passionate news editor who can help guide quality breaking, relevant journalism from concept to execution leading a team of reporters. In this position, leadership and journalistic experience is a must. This veteran journalist will work with our established news reporters and editors to exercise independent judgment to present to our audience the most important news of the day. This job would ideally be based out of our Washington, D.C.-area office.

Here is what you’ll be responsible for in this position:

  • Maintaining homepage value for audience by keeping it relevant, timely and interesting.
  • Curating breaking news topics and organizing corresponding internal & external coverage, opinion, and community posts.
  • Assigning, editing and posting well-sourced breaking posts for IJR about politics and/or current events that people will need to share.
  • Following your own leads and writing your own stories, as you see fit.
  • Writing, editing and social media understanding a must.
  • Working quickly in a collaborative fashion with editors and/or other team members.
  • Management of a team of 3-4 and news Fellows.
  • Twitter junkie and SEO strategy a plus (+)

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years professional writing and editing experience in a fast-paced digital newsroom environment with published byline.
  • The ability to understand others’ perspectives in order to present information objectively and fairly.
  • Humor, wit, and the competitive drive to stand out.
  • Comprehensive understanding of all major social media platforms.
  • Comprehensive understanding of current events and American news and politics.
  • The ability to ensure legitimacy, accuracy and reader trust is maintained across editorial operations.
