What it's about
Ron Chernow's biography argues that Ulysses S. Grant, remembered for a century as a butcher and a drunk, was in fact one of America's most morally serious leaders: a military strategist who won the Civil War through relentless coordinated pressure, and a president who fought harder for black civil rights than any chief executive between Lincoln and Johnson. Drawing on letters, dispatches, and Grant's own memoirs, Chernow reconstructs a man whose reputation was deliberately diminished by Lost Cause propagandists eager to elevate Robert E. Lee.

Who it's for
- Readers of Civil War and Reconstruction history who want a revisionist account of Grant's presidency - People interested in how personal reputation gets shaped, distorted, and later reclaimed by historians - Anyone drawn to stories of resilience, since Grant failed repeatedly before age forty and again in his final years
What’s inside
- 1The Long Road to Failure1 min
Grant's pre-war years of quiet failure, rather than early promise, forged the resilience and lack of pretension that later made him an effective wartime commander.
- 2Unconditional Surrender1 min
Grant's willingness to accept heavy casualties in pursuit of decisive victory, not any single tactical stroke of genius, is what separated him from cautious Union predecessors.
- 3A Rare Partnership1 min
Grant's rapport with Lincoln, built on political humility rather than tactical brilliance alone, explains why he was the only Union general trusted with full command.
- 4Hammering It Out1 min
Grant won the war through coordinated, simultaneous pressure on multiple fronts rather than through any single tactical masterstroke.
- 5The Bottle and the Myth1 min
The popular image of Grant as a habitual drunk owes more to the propaganda of his political enemies than to any documented pattern of behavior.
- 6The Second Emancipation1 min
Grant's presidency deployed federal power against racial terrorism more forcefully than any administration between Lincoln and Lyndon Johnson.
- 7Betrayed by Loyalty1 min
The corruption scandals of Grant's presidency reflect an excess of personal loyalty rather than any personal venality on his part.
- 8Grant and Ward1 min
The same trusting temperament that made Grant an effective commander and a loyal friend became the very trait that destroyed him financially.
- 9A Race Against Death1 min
Grant's memoir was less a literary vanity project than a disciplined, urgent act to secure his family's future and reclaim his own historical narrative.
- 10Undoing the Lost Cause1 min
Grant's twentieth-century reputation as a butcher and failed president was substantially manufactured by Confederate apologists seeking to elevate Robert E. Lee.
