In brief
The Gulf crisis is triggering severe energy shortages in Bangladesh and Pakistan, with LNG and oil supply disruptions driving blackouts, higher fuel costs, and rising production costs for industries like garments in Bangladesh. Governments are resorting to subsidies and spot-market purchases to cope, while households face intermittent gas, long cooking waits, and power outages as regional energy markets feel the strain.
The United States announced new tariffs of 10% and 12.5% on imports from about 60 trading partners over forced-labor enforcement, stating the measures replace existing duties rather than add new ones, with Bangladesh noting no new tariff but a replacement taking effect after a legal transition. The development drew positive EU sentiment toward the tariff framework while the UK and Britain said their trade terms remain unchanged and that zero tariffs on whisky and medical technology could benefit British exporters.
Bangladesh Bank announced new circulars to ease foreign exchange transactions for freelancers and individual service exporters, expanding digital payment access and simplifying documentation. The rules allow small-value inward remittances up to $20,000, permit up to $10,000 per transaction via online payment gateways, increase exporters’ retention quotas to 50% for ICT firms and 30% for others, and broaden the use of dual-currency cards, MFSPs, and PSPs to strengthen formal remittance channels and foreign exchange inflows.
