About Like a Virgin
"Like a Virgin" is a song by American singer Madonna from her second studio album of the same name (1984). Written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly and produced by Nile Rodgers, it was released as the album's lead single on November 6, 1984. Steinberg conceived the lyrics after emerging from a difficult relationship and beginning a new one, drawing on the sense of renewal he experienced at the time. Musically, "Like a Virgin" is a dance-rock song built around a synth-bass groove, guitar and drums, with an arrangement drawing on Motown and the sound of Rodgers' band Chic. Lyrically, it uses virginity as a metaphor for the emotional renewal of a new relationship, while its double entendres and ambiguous wording allow for both romantic and sexual interpretations.
