Mexico Storms: Two Dead, 10 Missing
Live storm radar — Baja California Sur, Mexico
At least two people have died in Mexico and 10 remain missing after torrential rain and flooding linked to Hurricane Simon and storm Rachel. Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado confirmed at a Monday briefing that 71-year-old died when a retaining wall collapsed in Chilpancingo. Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar said a girl died from former Hurricane Rachel and that eight people were missing in Ensenada and two in San Felipe. La Jornada reported two deaths in Baja California and 11 missing. El Pais reported cliff diver Juan Patines died in Mazatlan after jumping into the sea Saturday night and failing to return ashore; authorities halted cliff-diving there, and officials have not confirmed a link to Simon. Simon weakened from Category 4 to Category 2, with winds around 155 km/h per the US National Hurricane Center, its center about 115 km west-southwest of Cabo Corrientes and drifting west at 3 km/h. Forecasters say landfall could come Thursday or Friday. Rachel peaked as a Category 3 in early October and made landfall as a post-tropical cyclone, with remnants moving into southern California.
