Amp It Up
Leading for Hypergrowth by Raising Expectations, Increasing Urgency, and Elevating Standards

What it's about
Frank Slootman argues that most companies fail to grow not because they lack strategy or resources but because they lack intensity. Drawing on his experience turning around Data Domain, ServiceNow, and Snowflake, he contends that leadership is primarily the act of raising an organization's operating temperature: sharper standards, faster decisions, blunter communication, and personal involvement in the details that actually move revenue. The book mattered because it offered a counter-narrative to consensus-driven, process-heavy management fashionable in late-2010s tech.

Pick a finish date and Genius lays out the days — the plan shows today's target and keeps you honest.
Read together
Start a circle and share the code — everyone sees everyone's honest place in the book. Accountability, not leaderboards.
Who it's for
- A newly appointed CEO or general manager inheriting a company that feels comfortable but stalled - A sales or operations executive frustrated by slow decision cycles and diffuse accountability - A founder scaling past product-market fit who needs a framework for go-to-market discipline
What’s inside
- 1Amping Up: Intensity as the Core Lever1 min
Most underperforming companies are not short on strategy or resources but on intensity, and a leader's first job is to raise the organization's operating temperature.
- 2Start With a Blank Sheet of Paper1 min
Inherited strategy and legacy assumptions are usually the biggest obstacle to growth, so leaders should periodically rebuild the plan from zero rather than adjust it at the margins.
- 3Speed Is a Strategy, Not an Execution Detail1 min
Decision speed itself creates competitive advantage independent of decision quality, because momentum compounds and slow organizations lose both market position and talent.
- 4Talent Density Over Talent Management1 min
Raising the average caliber of the team matters more than training or motivating the people already in it, which means leaders must be willing to replace rather than coach indefinitely.
- 5Leaders Must Own the Mechanics, Not Just the Vision1 min
A CEO who delegates operational detail entirely to subordinates loses the ability to keep standards high, because standards are set and enforced in the mechanics, not in the strategy deck.
- 6Directness as a Cultural Operating System1 min
Blunt, low-context communication reduces organizational friction more effectively than diplomatic consensus-building, even though it feels harsh to people used to softer norms.
- 7Win the Market, Not Just the Product1 min
Product excellence is necessary but not sufficient for growth, because most growth bottlenecks sit in go-to-market execution and category framing rather than in engineering.
- 8Scaling Discipline: Building the IPO-Ready Machine1 min
Readiness for scale is a deliberate operational choice made well before it becomes necessary, not something that emerges naturally as a company grows.
