What it's about
James Kerr spent time embedded with New Zealand's rugby team, the All Blacks, statistically the most successful side in sporting history, to ask why they win so consistently. He argues that their dominance rests not on talent alone but on a deliberately built culture of humility, character-based selection, shared purpose, and distributed leadership. The book translates these practices into lessons for managers and organizations, arguing that sustained excellence is a cultural discipline, not a strategic accident.

What’s inside
- 1Sweep the Sheds1 min
Sustainable excellence begins with discipline in the smallest, least visible tasks, not with grand strategy.
- 2Select for Character, Not Just Talent1 min
Excluding talented but corrosive individuals protects long-term performance more than including them protects short-term results.
- 3Better People Make Better All Blacks1 min
A team oriented toward a purpose larger than winning performs more consistently than one that measures itself only by the scoreboard.
- 4Go for the Gap1 min
The moment an organization feels satisfied with its results is the moment its decline quietly begins.
- 5Pass the Ball1 min
Leadership performs more reliably when authority is distributed among many people than when it is concentrated in one captain or coach.
- 6Keep a Blue Head1 min
Composure under pressure is a trained response, not a fixed personality trait, and it can be deliberately rebuilt after failure.
- 7Ritual, Symbol, and Story1 min
Shared ritual and narrative bind a group's identity more durably than rules, incentives, or mission statements.
- 8Be a Good Ancestor1 min
The final measure of leadership is not what a leader wins while present but what remains standing after they leave.
